All history of the Mediterranean Cultures is also the history of the interaction of the cultures and people of the area of the land surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.The Mediterranean Sea is the SUPERHIGHWAY of transport, trade, and cultural exchange. The Medterranean Sea encompasses 3 continents : Western Asia, North Africa, and Southern Europe. The Mediterranean history is important in understanding the originand development of the Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Canaanite, Phoenician, Hebrew, Carthaginian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Christian, and Islamic cultures. The Mediterranean Sea is not included in the name of a ocean because of two reasons, One: its too small to be named a ocean and Two: its closed in size and shape.
